A man in his 60s was arrested on May 31 after allegedly setting fire to a Seoul Metro Line 5 train, injuring 23 people and prompting the evacuation of hundreds, authorities said.
The blaze broke out around 8:43 a.m. as the train traveled between Yeouinaru and Mapo stations. Officials said the suspect, identified only by his surname, Won, reportedly poured gasoline on clothing and ignited it with a torch-style lighter in the fourth car of the train, about 300 meters from Mapo Station.
Approximately 400 passengers were on board. The train operator and passengers used fire extinguishers to suppress the flames before evacuating through the tunnel. The fire was fully extinguished at 10:24 a.m. following the deployment of 230 emergency responders, including 166 firefighters and 68 firefighting vehicles.
Seoul Metro temporarily suspended service between Yeouido and Aeogae stations. Trains bypassed Yeouinaru and Mapo stations without stopping, with full service resuming at 10:06 a.m.
Of the 23 injured, including the suspect, most suffered from smoke inhalation or minor physical injuries such as ankle fractures. An additional 129 people were treated at the scene, but no life-threatening injuries were reported.
Won was arrested near Yeouinaru Station at 9:45 a.m. as he attempted to flee. Police say he admitted to starting the fire out of dissatisfaction with the outcome of his divorce lawsuit. When asked by reporters at the Seoul Southern District Court on June 2 whether the arson was in protest of the ruling, Won responded, “Yes.” A man identifying himself as his brother said Won had worked as a taxi driver and was upset over alimony payments.
Authorities estimate the property damage at 330 million won. Seoul Metro is considering legal action to recover damages and said it would review internal safety procedures. One concern raised was that surveillance footage from the train was not transmitted to the control center in real time.
The incident has drawn comparisons to the 2003 Daegu subway fire, where an arsonist set fire to a train using a gasoline-filled container, killing 192 people and injuring more than 150. While the recent fire was quickly contained and did not result in fatalities, the similarities in motive and method have reignited concerns over subway security and emergency preparedness in South Korea.
