The History of Aquariums   

• Human fascination with aquatic life dates back to ancient times. In the 1300s, Chinese craftsmen created exquisite porcelain tubs for breeding and observing goldfish. These early vessels, valued for their beauty, later evolved into forms similar to modern fishbowls, though they were mainly decorative. The transition from opaque containers to transparent glass occurred in the 19th century. French marine biologist Jeanne Villepreux-Power developed an early form of the modern aquarium that allowed for direct observation of fish and their behavior. This innovation enabled scientists to study marine creatures in controlled environments, a significant feat that led to numerous discoveries. As designs improved, aquariums took on two key roles. Some became tools for scientific research, while others focused on public display for tourists. Today, most public aquarium facilities blend science and leisure, offering both insight and entertainment.
