• Marthe Gautier, a French physician and researcher, played a pivotal role in uncovering the chromosomal cause of Down syndrome. In 1958, while working in Paris, she cultured cells from children with the condition and observed an extra chromosome on the 21st pair. Whereas most people have 46 chromosomes, these cells had 47 ? a discovery that identified trisomy 21 and transformed the study of genetics and prenatal medicine. At the time, Gautier was early in her career and worked with minimal equipment, often purchasing supplies with her own money.
