Although the Tokugawa shogunate enforced its isolationist sakoku policy, Japan was not completely closed to the outside world. The government designated a few locations where limited trade with foreign countries was permitted. One of the most important was Dejima, a small artificial island off Nagasaki, where European merchants were confined and allowed to conduct tightly regulated trade.
Dejima’s first occupants were Portuguese merchants. However, the shogunate feared they were spreading Christianity, which it believed could threaten its rule. After the Shimabara Rebellion, which officials largely blamed on Christian influence, the Portuguese were expelled from Japan. The shogunate then ordered the Dutch East India Company to move its trading post from Hirado to Dejima. Unlike the Portuguese, the Dutch agreed not to promote Christianity in exchange for the right to trade.
For more than 200 years, Dejima served as Japan’s main link to the Western world. Through this small trading post, Japan gained access to Western books, scientific knowledge, and information about developments in Europe.
