The History of the Honeycrisp Apple   

• The Honeycrisp apple, adopted as the state fruit of Minnesota in 2006, has become one of the most beloved apple varieties today. It was created as part of the University of Minnesota’s apple breeding program to develop a tree that could survive cold winters and produce high-quality fruit. Researchers crossbred the Macoun and Honeygold apples in 1960 and planted the first Honeycrisp seedling in 1962. Honeycrisp apples are typically 7 to 10 cm in diameter, with skin that ranges from 60 to 90 percent mottled red over a yellow background. They are known for their incredible sweetness and crisp, juicy texture. Honeycrisp apples are typically harvested from mid-September to mid-October, the best time being the last week of September. Today, millions of Honeycrisp trees grow in the U.S. and Canada and even in places as far as South Africa and New Zealand.
