Ordained as a minister, Jackson built a national profile in Chicago, where his powerful, rhythmic speaking style energized supporters and drew attention to issues affecting marginalized communities. In the 1980s, Jackson ran for president twice, becoming one of the most influential Black political leaders in the United States.
