Flamingo chicks are not born pink! They hatch with gray or white feathers that slowly turn pink because of the food they eat. Their parents feed them a nutrient-rich red “milk” produced in their throats, full of natural red, yellow, or orange pigments called carotenoids. As they grow, flamingos eat carotenoid-rich algae and tiny shrimp, which adds more pink color to their feathers. During breeding season, adults may look paler because they lose feathers and eat less.
