Sanxingdui: Ancient Chinese Civilization Shrouded in Mystery   

• The Sanxingdui civilization was a Bronze Age culture that flourished in China about 3,000 years ago. It was discovered by chance in 1927, when a farmer in Sichuan province unearthed jade artifacts while digging an irrigation ditch. News of the find reached Vyvyan Donnithorne in 1931, and the Anglican missionary alerted contacts in nearby provinces. In 1934, David Crockett Graham, director of the museum at West China Union University, led an excavation that confirmed the existence of a large, previously unknown city. However, political instability in the following years forced the work to come to a halt. Interest resumed in 1986, when local workers uncovered remarkable artifacts made of gold, bronze, jade, and pottery. Many items were burned, broken, and fragmented, yet they clearly indicated a sophisticated culture. Archaeologists soon revealed golden masks, animal-faced sculptures, and intricate decorative figures. The craftsmanship appeared strikingly advanced, even compared with artifacts from later periods, challenging earlier assumptions about artistic development in ancient China. Despite these discoveries, no verified written records have been found, limiting scholars’ understanding of the civilization’s beliefs and social structure. Sanxingdui artifacts are known for their distinctive style. Human statues and masks feature exaggerated, protruding eyes and angular faces that do not resemble natural human forms. Some bronze heads are adorned with delicate gold foil masks, demonstrating exceptional technical skill. The civilization’s ending remains a mystery. While many archaeologists initially believed Sanxingdui was conquered and destroyed by a neighboring state, recent geological evidence suggests it might have been a natural disaster that wiped out this ancient civilization.
