The Site That Rewrote History: The Mystery of Gobekli Tepe   

• When we look at the pyramids of Giza, Egypt, we are amazed by what ancient people built with limited technology. But could megalithic structures just as complex and grand have existed long before the pyramids? For years, many archaeologists said no. But ever since the rediscovery of Gobekli Tepe, archaeologists are starting to believe that the history of civilization may date back to earlier times than originally thought. The site was first noted in 1963, when a team of archaeologists, comprised of researchers from Istanbul University and the University of Chicago, stumbled upon stone tools and fragments of pillars. Despite the discovery, they did not pursue further excavation. At the time, they thought the stone slabs that they had found were simple grave markers. This was because the top parts of the pillars had been damaged by farming, and local farmers even broke stones apart to clear land, unaware of their significance. Everything changed in 1994, when German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt revisited the site. He quickly realized the visible stones were only a small part of what lay buried in sand. After making his first visit, he returned to the area with a team. Together, they dug deeper and finally discovered the full scale of the pillars and carved stones resembling animals. This is why it was said that the rediscovery of Gobekli Tepe changed archaeologists’ perception of human history. Even today, experts debate the purpose of Gobekli Tepe. Some believe it was built mainly for religious rituals, while others think it served additional social or cultural roles. Regardless of its original function, the discovery stands as a major milestone, reshaping our understanding of when complex human societies first emerged.
