Russia’s Enduring Passion for Ballet   

• While ballet originated in the royal courts of France and Italy, it was in Russia that the art form underwent a significant transformation, elevating it into a national treasure. Over the past three centuries, ballet has become deeply woven into the fabric of Russian culture and identity. Ballet first arrived in Russia in the early 18th century during the reign of Peter the Great, who introduced European customs as part of his modernization efforts. Then, under Catherine the Great, ballet flourished. Formal schools and theaters were established in cities such as St. Petersburg and Moscow, where many young dancers were recruited from orphanages or impoverished households and trained from childhood. By the 19th century, Russian ballet began to develop a unique style. The arrival of French choreographer Marius Petipa marked a defining moment. Petipa spent decades in Russia, creating timeless works like “Swan Lake,” “The Sleeping Beauty,” and “The Nutcracker.” These works combined technical precision with emotional expression, helping Russian ballet gain international acclaim. The early 20th century brought Russian ballet to global audiences through Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Based in Paris, the ballet company featured visionary choreographers and dancers such as George Balanchine and Vaslav Nijinsky. Their bold, modern interpretations revolutionized ballet and captivated audiences across Europe and beyond. The Soviet period placed new ideological restrictions on ballet. Some dancers, seeking creative freedom, left the Soviet Union and shared the Russian style with the world. Today, Russia remains a global leader in ballet. Iconic institutions like the Bolshoi Theatre, Mariinsky Theatre, and Vaganova Academy continue to train some of the finest dancers, keeping this treasured tradition alive for new generations.
