Tadej Poga?ar did not begin with dreams of becoming cycling’s biggest star. Born near Komenda, Slovenia, in 1998, he first preferred football. His direction changed when his older brother joined a cycling club. Poga?ar followed him, started racing at nine and quickly discovered that long climbs suited his fearless style.
He joined UAE Team Emirates in 2019 and wasted little time. That year, he won the Tour of California and finished third in his first Vuelta a Espana. His breakthrough arrived at the 2020 Tour de France, where he overturned the race on the final mountain time trial. He defended the title in 2021, finished second in 2022 and 2023, then returned to the top in 2024 and 2025. His victories also include the Giro d’Italia, major one-day classics and world road titles.
In France this July, Poga?ar controlled the Tour from the mountains. He responded to attacks, protected his lead and finished the 2026 race with a fifth title. At 27, he is now level with the most successful riders in Tour history. Even with that record, he says his main goal is not counting victories, but returning to compete against the strongest riders.
