Pimples are a natural part of the teenage years. They form when pores become blocked with sebum, the natural oil that keeps skin from drying out. During puberty, hormonal changes cause the skin to produce excess oil. When this combines with dead skin cells and bacteria, pores can become inflamed and develop into pimples. Breakouts most often appear on the forehead, nose, and chin, an area known as the T-zone.
Caring for your skin does not have to be complicated. Wash your face in the morning and night with warm water and a mild cleanser designed for acne-prone skin. Use your fingertips instead of a rough cloth, and don’t scrub. Washing too frequently can irritate the skin and increase redness. After cleansing, apply an over-the-counter lotion or cream containing benzoyl peroxide to kill bacteria.
Although it may be tempting, avoid popping pimples as it can force bacteria deeper into the skin and lead to scarring. Limit how often you touch your face, and clean items such as your phone regularly to prevent the spread of bacteria.
