A Ukrainian Lawmaker With a Bold Idea for Peace   

• Ukrainian lawmaker Andrii Nikolaienko, known in Kyiv as a “pro-Korea” voice, says Ukraine’s most realistic path to peace may resemble one taken by the Korean Peninsula. In an interview with Newsis ahead of the war’s fourth year, he said neither side is likely to achieve a decisive breakthrough as military and economic resources continue to wear down. Nikolaienko proposed a “Korean-style armistice,” referring to the model created after the Korean War. Under such a plan, fighting would pause along the current front line without Ukraine formally surrendering territory. However, he said a frozen line alone would not ensure lasting peace. Ukraine would also need strong and credible security guarantees, possibly including an international force supported by European partners. Nikolaienko warned that Russia is unlikely to accept such terms soon, meaning the conflict could continue through the summer, with meaningful negotiations difficult before autumn. He also stressed the importance of reconstruction.
