Warming Seas Bring More Sharks, Jellyfish to Korean Beaches   

• Local governments across South Korea are stepping up beach safety measures as record-high sea temperatures drive more large sharks and venomous jellyfish into coastal waters during the peak summer vacation season. Warmer waters have pushed warm-water fish species north along the country’s eastern coast, attracting aggressive predators such as shortfin mako and blue sharks. Maritime authorities detected 46 large sharks in eastern waters during the first half of the year, nearly four times the 12 recorded during the same period last year. At the same time, highly venomous Nomura’s jellyfish have appeared along the coast earlier than usual. The jellyfish can grow up to 2 meters in diameter and deliver painful stings that can cause serious reactions. According to the National Institute of Fisheries Science, average surface ocean temperatures reached a 26-year high of 17.17 degrees Celsius from January through June. This warming trend has accelerated plankton growth, fueling a rapid expansion of jellyfish populations across major resort areas like Jeju Island. In response, coastal cities and counties are installing protective nets and repelling devices, increasing surveillance, and adding rescue personnel.
