Victoria Falls: World’s Largest Sheet of Falling Water   

• Situated on the Zambezi River at the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls remains the world’s largest curtain of falling water. Known indigenously as Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “The Smoke That Thunders,” the falls are a major landmark in Southern Africa. The waterfall measures 1,708 meters wide and 108 meters high. While it is neither the highest nor the widest waterfall globally, its combined dimensions make it the largest sheet of falling water on Earth. For comparison, the falls are roughly twice the height of North America’s Niagara Falls. Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone was the first European to view the site in 1855, naming it in honor of Queen Victoria. Today, the area is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site and is managed by two national parks: Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in Zambia and Victoria Falls National Park in Zimbabwe. The falls occur where the Zambezi River drops into a narrow chasm connected to a series of basalt gorges. This geological formation produces a mist visible from miles away, supporting a unique rainforest ecosystem.
