Yun Dong-ju and Song Mong-gyu: Poetic Voices of Resistance   

• On Feb. 14, Yonsei University marked the 80th anniversary of the deaths of Yun Dong-ju and Song Mong-gyu, two poets who became symbols of resistance during Korea’s colonial period. A solemn ceremony was held at the university’s poetry monument, where attendees laid flowers in their honor. Family representative Yun Hyung-ju highlighted the lasting influence of Yun’s poetry, which continues to inspire readers worldwide. More than a tribute, the event underscored the power of literature in the struggle for freedom. Yun Dong-ju and Song Mong-gyu were first cousins and lifelong companions who pursued their education together. After attending Yangcheon School and Yonsei University, they moved to Japan ? Yun to Doshisha University and Song to Kyoto Imperial University ? where they became involved in the Korean independence movement. In 1943, both were arrested for anti-Japanese activities and sentenced to two years in Fukuoka Prison. Yun died under mysterious circumstances on Feb. 16, 1945, and Song passed away the following month. Though his life was brief, Yun Dong-ju left an enduring mark on Korean literature. His poetry combines lyrical depth with themes of identity, oppression, and hope. Poems such as “Seosi (Foreword)” and “Byeol Heneun Bam (One Night I Count the Stars)” reflect both deep introspection and national longing. His posthumous collection, Haneulgwa baramgwa byeolgwa si (Sky, Wind, and Stars), cemented his status as one of Korea’s most celebrated modern poets, with translations reaching audiences worldwide. Less widely known but equally dedicated, Song Mong-gyu was a determined activist. He continued to fight for Korea’s sovereignty despite the consequences.
