Voices From Lima: Peruvian Embassy Inspires Youth of Korea   

• Located in a towering building in central Seoul, the Embassy of Peru is a vital bridge connecting the youth of two nations. On Aug. 7, Times Core met with Peruvian Ambassador Paul Duclos to discuss the deepening ties and future cooperation between the two nations. Since establishing diplomatic relations, South Korea and Peru have cultivated a remarkably resilient and dynamic partnership. Historic milestones like the 2011 Free Trade Agreement and the 2012 Comprehensive Strategic Partnership have laid a solid foundation for sustainable growth. “Peru remains one of the most stable economies in Latin America,” Ambassador Duclos highlighted. “We serve as a reliable supplier of critical minerals essential for the global green transition ? such as copper, zinc, and lithium ? while contributing to Korea’s food security with high-quality superfoods like avocados and grapes.” The scope of bilateral collaboration is also rapidly expanding into high-tech industries and strategic defense manufacturing. Recent joint projects include the modernization of naval shipbuilding facilities in Callao, the co-production of armored vehicles, and the advancement of digital government initiatives. Coupled with transformative infrastructure developments, such as the Port of Chancay, representing a $3.6 billion investment, Peru is poised to become South America’s premier logistics hub, offering vast new opportunities for Korean innovation and investment. Beyond economic indicators, Ambassador Duclos strongly emphasized that the true heart of bilateral relations lies in cultural and human connections. Through nationwide initiatives like the #MyStoryPERU campaign and various cultural events, the Embassy actively brings Peru’s rich heritage closer to Korean citizens. “It is truly inspiring to see how young Peruvians are falling in love with Korean culture ? from K-pop and K-dramas to K-food,” Ambassador Duclos shared with a warm smile. “There is tremendous excitement in Peru as we prepare to welcome BTS for their historic visit.” He added that a growing number of Peruvian students studying in Korean universities act as vital young cultural ambassadors, deepening mutual trust every day. Looking ahead under President Keiko Fujimori’s administration, Peru aims to strengthen economic openness and successfully conclude its OECD accession process with Korea’s steadfast support.
