Garden Bridge across the Thames
Untitled Document
The River Thames flows through London, England, from the southwest to the east. Over the river, there are about 214 bridges, including footbridges, road bridges, and railway bridges. In a few years, a brand-new type of bridge will be added to the list. What kind of the bridge is it?

The new bridge is none other than a “Garden Bridge.” As you can tell from the bridge’s name, there will be no traffic or noise, but greenery and birdsong on the bridge, just like a long garden. Since benches will be set along the bridge, people will be able to spend their time, enjoying picturesque scenery with the seasons.

Joanna Lumley, a British actress, and Thomas Heatherwick, an architect, will collaborate on this project. According to them, it will span from the Temple underground station to the South Bank. Also, the construction on the 367m-long bridge will begin in 2015.

Joanna said, “There will be grasses, trees, wild flowers and plants unique to London’s natural riverside habitat. It will bring to Londoners and visitors alike peace and beauty and magic.” It is expected that this bridge will be the new landmark for London.
