Read the following article, letting your student repeat after you sentence by sentence.

Say Thank You to Your Teacher! 

May 15 is Teachers’ Day스승의날. We celebrate the day every year. On Teachers’ Day, we say “thank you” to our teachers. They help us learn many things at school. They also take care of us.

There are many wonderful teachers in Korea. We started celebrating Teachers’ Day in 1963. But in the past, we celebrate the day on May 24. In 1965, the Korean government decided to celebrate Teachers’ Day on May 15. This was because King Sejong세종대왕 was born on May 15.

On Teachers’ Day, we give our teachers carnations. Many students also prepare pretty cards for their teachers. Tomorrow, don’t forget to say “thank you” to your teacher! Your teacher will be very happy!

(종속접속사는 문장과 문장을 연결하는 다리 역할을 한다.)
* that: ~인 것, ~라는 것 [that는 특별한 의미가 없으므로 생략할 수도 있다.

(나는 놀라웠다.)
He was Jane’s brother.
(그는 제인의 오빠이다.)
-> I was surprised (that) he was Jane’s brother.
(나는 그가 제인의 오빠라는 것에 놀라웠다.)
I believe.
(나는 믿는다.)
He will win the race.
(그가 경주에서 승리할 것이다.)
->I believe (that) he will win the race.
(나는 그가 경주에서 승리할 것이라고 믿는다.)
* if / whether: ~인지 아닌지
I don’t know.
(나는 알지 못한다.)
He will come.
(그는 돌아올 것이다.)
-> I don’t know if/ whether he will come.
(나는 그가 돌아 올지 안 올지 알지 못한다.)
He asked.
(그는 물었다.)
The weather was fine.
(날씨는 좋았다.)
->He asked if/ whether the weather was fine.
(그는 날씨가 좋은지 아닌지 물었다.)
