Most people believe Galileo invented the telescope. He was the first person to use it to study the stars, but the telescope was actually invented by Hans Lippershey in 1608. It was first used by sailors and soldiers to see across far distances. A classic telescope is made with many lenses, or mirrors that gather, bend, and focus light. Looking through a telescope magnifies the object so we can see clearly. This 400-year-old invention has given light to some amazing things!
