Parasite¡¯ Makes History0After taking the world by storm last year, Bong Joon-ho¡¯s latest film, Parasite, made history at the Academy Awards in early February. It entered the night with six nominations, including one for Best International Feature Film, which it was almost guaranteed to win. The other categories were more competitive. However, by the end of the ceremony, Parasite had won four awards, the most of any film this year. Besides the award for Best International Feature Film, it also received awards for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and, in the biggest surprise of the night, Best Picture. Bong Joon-ho¡¯s film beat out eight other films to win the Best Picture award, including Martin Scorsese¡¯s The Irishman and Quentin Tarantino¡¯s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Though it was the 11th foreign-language film to be nominated for the top prize, Parasite became the first to actually win the award. For the most part, film critics were delighted by the surprise winner. The most critically acclaimed films usually seem to lose to the more broadly appealing films, and it was assumed that World War I epic 1917 would play that role this year. Almost every year, at least one foreign-language film becomes a critic favorite. However, since they are often serious dramas, the films do not break through into popular American culture and are often overlooked. Parasite, however, is different. ¡®Parasite¡¯ Makes History3Besides receiving almost unanimously positive reviews from critics, the film has also been a favorite of audiences. It has already earned more than $175 million (W208 billion) at theaters around the globe, and it is set to earn even more after its success at the Academy Awards. As a prize for being named Best Picture, Parasite was re-released on more than 1,500 screens across Britain, the widest-ever theatrical release for an Asian film in the country. A new black and white version was also released in theaters, and it will now be made into a six-part American mini-series starring Tilda Swinton. In Korea, people are generally proud of the film¡¯s achievements. In addition, filming locations featured in the film are now becoming tourist attractions around Seoul. Though the Academy was praised for naming Parasite Best Picture, some people were critical of the fact that none of the actors in the film were nominated for any of the acting awards. Maybe Bong Joon-ho¡¯s next film can break that barrier as well.
