The Sun in HD0Children are told not to stare directly at the sun. However, thanks to a new telescope and a group of astronomers who ignored that warning, we now have the most detailed images of the sun ever captured. The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, which had been under construction since 2013 and cost over $300 million (W354.6 billion) to build, sits on top of a 3,000-m tall volcano on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Most telescopes operate at night, after the sun has gone down, and point towards deep space. Obviously, in order to capture images of the sun, this telescope must not only operate during the day but also point directly at the sun. Since it is so sensitive to heat, it is equipped with eight cooling tanks that hold enough ice to fill a swimming pool. In its first ever publicly released images, the telescope captured the sun in a resolution more than two times higher than any other photograph. Surprisingly, the pictures show that the surface of the sun is covered with cell-like structures, each more than six times the size of Korea.
