Novel Coronavirus Death Toll Exceeds 1,0000The number of people infected with the newly discovered coronavirus continues to climb, with more than 43,000 confirmed cases around the world, including more than two dozen in Korea. Unfortunately, of those 43,000 people, more than 1,000 have died, surpassing the total number of people killed by the SARS outbreak 17 years ago. If there is a bright side to these numbers, the virus seems to be maintaining its estimated mortality rate of about 2.2 percent, which is much lower than that of SARS. However, the new coronavirus is much more contagious. Most of the confirmed cases have come from the Hubei province in China, specifically the city of Wuhan. In other parts of China, the spread seems to be slowing, as the number of new cases reported at the beginning of February dropped by more than 40 percent, from 900 to just over 500, in less than a week. Thanks in part to the quarantines and health checks of neighboring countries, a severe worldwide outbreak seems to have been prevented for now. Novel Coronavirus Death Toll Exceeds 1,0002In Wuhan, however, the situation remains dire. The hospitals are full, so three additional quarantine facilities have been opened in addition to a number of hotels and university dormitories that have been converted into makeshift treatment centers. Initially, the government asked everyone who was not severely ill to self-quarantine in their own homes but later said that all sick people should seek treatment. Unfortunately for many, hospital beds are reserved for people who have officially tested positive for the virus, a process that takes time and resources. Besides limiting the number of people who can receive care, this may also be leading to an underestimate of the total number of people who have contracted the virus. The disruption caused by the coronavirus has already dealt a significant blow to the Chinese economy, as tourism has stopped and workers are staying home. Across the country, people have been asked to stay indoors, leaving Chinese cities mostly empty. Many factories that the world depends on for cars, phones, and much more have been shut down. The government is asking for detailed health plans before allowing them to reopen. Supply chains have been slowed and experts are predicting a drastic drop in production, both in China and in foreign factories that depend on Chinese-made parts. Ultimately, the long-term damage to the Chinese economy, though unknown for now, may prove to be significant.
