A Blossom of Hope: Zoo Welcomes First Asian Elephant Calf in Decades
For the first time in nearly 25 years, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute has welcomed an Asian elephant calf, marking a major milestone for the endangered species.
The female calf arrived at 1:15 a.m. on Feb. 2 after a 21-month pregnancy, born to 12-year-old Nhi Linh and 44-year-old Spike. The birth followed a carefully planned breeding recommendation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan. Because both parents’ genes are underrepresented in zoos, their calf strengthens genetic diversity in the North American population. Fewer than 50,000 Asian elephants are estimated to remain globally.
Eleven days later, the calf was named Linh Mai. In Vietnamese, Linh means “spirit” or “soul,” and Mai refers to the apricot blossom, a flower associated with Tet, or Lunar New Year. The public selected it through an online vote that raised nearly $59,000 for elephant conservation. Inspired by the mother’s origins and the Lunar New Year, the name reflects renewal and hope.
Before meeting visitors this spring, Linh Mai is bonding quietly with her family, bringing joy as a small but powerful sign of a species’ future.
