Beneath our feet lies a vast living network that functions much like invisible infrastructure. Instead of cables or wires, it is made of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, tiny organisms that connect to plant roots as countless threadlike strands through the soil. These strands, called hyphae, are microscopic tubes that transport water, nutrients, and carbon, allowing plants and fungi to exchange resources beneath the surface.
A study published in Science in June 2026 attempted to measure the global scale of this underground network for the first time. Researchers analyzed more than 16,000 soil samples collected from nine biomes and 100 ecoregions, including wetlands, steppes, and grasslands. Using machine learning and a high-resolution imaging robot, they estimated the total amount of fungal hyphae in the top layer of soil.
The results were astonishing. If all the hyphae were stretched into a single line, they would extend about 110 quadrillion kilometers ? nearly a billion times the distance from Earth to the sun. These fungal networks store roughly 300 megatons of carbon, about four to six times the mass of all living humans on Earth. Some of the densest fungal networks were found in grasslands, including the Florida Everglades, the Sudd wetlands in South Sudan, and the Tibetan steppe.
The study also revealed that agricultural land contains nearly half the fungal density of non-cultivated ecosystems. Fewer fungi may leave crops more vulnerable while reducing the soil’s ability to store carbon, an important part of regulating Earth’s climate.
The findings highlight that the hidden world beneath our feet plays a vital role in supporting ecosystems above ground. Protecting these underground fungal networks may be just as important as conserving the forests, grasslands, and wetlands they help sustain."
