Bhutan’s Ancient Traditions

People often spin prayer wheels filled with prayers, hoping for blessings like long life and the well-being of others. These prayer wheels are turned clockwise, and each turn carries a prayer for the person spinning it. Festivals in Bhutan, such as the Thimphu Drubchen, are deeply spiritual. This event features ceremonial dances, known as cham, where dancers wear colorful masks to honor female deities believed to offer protection. These dances have been performed for over 400 years, offering blessings to those who watch. Bhutan is also famous for its traditional archery competitions, where teams use bamboo bows and arrows to hit a distant target. The games can last all day, with celebrations for each successful shot.
