The Dutch Republic 
The Dutch Republic, or the United Provinces of the Netherlands, was a powerful and influential country in the 17th century. It comprised seven northern provinces that preceded the modern Netherlands. The Dutch Republic was unique because it was one of the first countries to establish a government led by elected leaders ? a system known as a republic.
